Earth and Environmental Sciences, 2009-2010
Through its TRIL Programme operating under an agreement with the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), ICTP will offer, for the years 2009 and 2010, a number of grants to scientists from Developing Countries (including Central and Eastern Europe) interested in taking part in the training and research activities carried out at the OGS laboratories. The main lines of activity at the OGS groups are described in the announcement for the fellowships.

National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics
(Trieste, Italy)

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (the Abdus Salam ICTP) and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) will offer in the years 2009 - 2010 a number of grants to scientists from Developing Countries (Central and Eastern Europe included) interested in taking part in the training and research activities carried out at the OGS laboratories. The main lines of activity at the OGS groups are described in the Annex.
The minimum amount of these grants will be Euro 1,350 per month and stays longer than twelve months may be possible. Limited funds for travel expenses will be available in case these are not covered by other sources. Health insurance coverage will be provided for visitors and their accompanying family members. A monthly family allowance for those having dependant family members will be granted.

Department of Oceanography

Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Experimental oceanography: studies of general circulation in the Eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, response to atmospheric forcing, statistical data analysis.
Fellowship coordinator: Crise, A. (acrise@ogs.trieste.it)
Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Numerical modelling of ocean dynamics and marine ecosystems, general circulation models for the Mediterranean and adjacent seas,
numerical studies of the coupling between biology and hydrodynamics, marine food web modelling, data assimilation applied to ecological parameters and fields.

Department of Marine Biology
Fellowship coordinator: Mosetti, R. (rmosetti@ogs.trieste.it)
Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Marine biology with special emphasis to phytoplankton dynamics,
primary production and biogeochemical cycles.
Facilities as: microscopes, chemical and genetics laboratories, bacteria and plankton cultures.




Department for Development of Marine Technology and Research
Fellowship coordinator: Rebesco, M. (mrebesco@ogs.trieste.it)
Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Clastic marine sedimentation; Antarctic paleoclimate;
Geological structure reconstruction and tectonics;
Geophysical data acquisition and processing at sea;
Geotechnical properties of sediments.

Department of Geophysics of the Lithosphere
Fellowship coordinator: Seriani, G. (gseriani@ogs.trieste.it)
Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Exploration and environmental geophysics;
Geophysical data acquisition methods and seismic data processing; Measurement while drilling methods;
Wave propagation in complex geological structures;
Seismic inversion and tomography; Gas hydrate and CO2 geophysical modeling;
Gravity field methods, radar and satellite remote sensing.

Department of Seismological Research
Fellowship coordinator: Priolo E. (epriolo@ogs.trieste.it)
Minimum duration of stay: 6 months
Research themes: Local earthquake tomography;
High-resolution earthquake location methods;
Local site response from ground motion data;
Engineering seismology, earthquakes modelling and site response analysis;
Seismic network, innovative data analysis and data exchange;
GPS geodetic network for estimating the crustal deformation
