PhD Studentship - Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces

Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

A postgraduate studentship is available to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.
With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces. As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers.
The project is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Taylor Hobson Ltd. It is expected that the student will spend some time at one or both of the industrial partners' premises.
A first degree (First class or High 2:1 honours) in the physical sciences or mathematics is required and an interest in optics would be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in numerical computing are essential and experience of optimisation techniques would be an advantage.
The preferred starting dates are 1 October 2010 or 1 December 2010 and the studentship will have a stipend of £8,000-£11,500 per annum, tax free, plus tuition fees.  This studentship is open to UK/EU and international students.

Research Positions in Agricultural Innovation Processes and Policies

RIU is a research and development programme designed to put agricultural research into use for developmental purposes and to conduct research on how to do this. The programme is funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). It follows earlier investments by DFID in agricultural and natural resources research supported through its renewable natural resources research strategy (RRNRRS). While this strategy delivered high quality research the uptake of this research and its impact on social and economic progress was modest.
RIU has appointed the LINK programme (www.innovationstudies.org) of UNU-MERIT (www.merit.unu) to act as its Central Research Team (CRT) with overall responsibility for designing and implementing its research. The CRT is headed by Dr. Andy Hall. Research in Africa is coordinated by Dr. Jeroen Dijkman. Research in Asia is coordinated by Dr. Rasheed Sulaiman. The CRT now wishes to appoint up to 6 research fellows from Asia and Africa to help study RIU’s portfolio of activities in these regions.
These positions would suit junior to middle-level research professionals who are interested in undertaking and publishing empirical research on agricultural and rural innovation. Research fellows will need to be able to work with a large degree of independence and deliver high quality written output. Support and mentoring will be provided by the CRT. Positions could be full or part-time.
Candidates should have:

  • Research experience on agricultural and rural innovation policies and processes
  • A recent relevant PhD is desirable, but candidates with a strong relevant publication record would also be considered
  • Positions could be full or part-time

These positions will be located in the regions where RIU works. Appointments will be made as personal services agreements (PSA) with UNU-MERIT. RIU is sponsored by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) until June 2011.

Candidates should submit a CV and covering letter to Christine Wheeler (c.wheeler@nrint.co.uk) from whom further details are available on request.

PhD project in Space and Solar Plasma Physics - Queen Mary University of London

PhD project in Space and Solar Plasma Physics
Queen Mary, University of London
Applications are invited for a SEPnet funded (South-East Physics network, http://www.sepnet.ac.uk/) PhD Studentship within the Astronomy Unit, School of Mathematical Sciences, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
The project is related to exciting, major unsolved problems of solar physics such as coronal heating http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/science/mysteries_l1/corona.html and solar flare dynamics. Type III radio bursts are believed to come from solar flare electrons that travel upwards, away from the Sun, on open magnetic field lines. The proposed work aims to fill the gap in understanding how the upwards moving electrons are accelerated and produce the observed radio emission. This will be achieved through kinetic-scale modelling of the phenomenon and numerical simulation results will be compared with radio and other wavelength observations. The project benefits from access to large-scale parallel 1000 core processor cluster via UKMHD consortium, while the radio data will be available via participation of QMUL in LOFAR-UK and SEPnet Astro consortia (http://astro.kent.ac.uk/SEPNET/). The LOw Frequency ARray, LOFAR (http://www.lofar-uk.org/), is a next-generation software-driven telescope currently under construction in the Netherlands and UK.
Dr David Tsiklauri, Senior Lecturer at Astronomy Unit, QMUL will be the PhD project supervisor, while Dr Aris Karastergiou, Astrophysics, Oxford University, will act in a co-supervisory capacity.
Applicants should have a good Honours degree in Physics or Applied Mathematics (at least 2:1 or equivalent) or a lower second class plus a Master's (MPhys) qualification. Programming experience in any high level language is highly desirable.
Candidates will receive full fees and tax free stipend of circa £13,000 per annum for three years.
Candidates should send their CV and names (with contact details) of two referees by Email to: D.Tsiklauri@qmul.ac.uk
The applications should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than 15 January 2010.

PhD Studentship - Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites - University of Glasgow

PhD Studentship
"Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites"
Space Advanced Research Team, Department of Aerospace Engineering
The Space Advanced Research Team at the University of Glasgow is currently seeking a PhD student to investigate the "Design and Mission Analysis of Femtosatellites"
The project consists of the design and development of femto-satellites with a volume of 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm and a weight of approximately 10 grams. These very tiny satellites are expected to be mainly made of stacked silicon microchips. Some microchips will be responsible for very specific tasks necessary for the survival of the mission (for example, communication, attitude control, etc.), whereas other microchips will form the scientific payload (for example, embedded microcameras, radiation detectors, etc.) These femto-satellites have the potential to drastically lower the costs of space missions and increase the frequency of the launches. Furthermore, the possibility of having a huge number of femto-satellites (more than 1,000) at a reasonable manufacturing price (less than £200 each) will increase the overall mission reliability (losing some of them will not jeopardize the overall mission objectives). It will also allow the conception of new mission scenarios and the assembly of large structures in space consisting of thousands of small elements (for example, interferometric antenna arrays, synthetic aperture radars, etc.) The doctoral student selected for this project will have to take into account not only the design trade-offs of present microelectronic technology, but also the mission design and analysis trade-offs applicable to space applications. In this process, it is expected that the doctoral student will be able to produce some advances in the state-of-the-art of this interdisciplinary field of research since the present design rules of small satellites cannot be directly applied to the design and development of femto-satellites due to the severe constraints in size and power consumption.
The PhD candidate for this post will hold an upper 1st class degree in either aerospace engineering or electrical & electronics engineering. The successful applicant will have good analytical and modelling skills, and good knowledge of microprocessors and/or space mission analysis and design. Enthusiasm and determination in exploring original ideas as well as good team spirit are desirable qualities of the successful candidate. A very good spoken and written English is essential.
Each Scholarship will run for 4 years, cover all tuition fees (EU or overseas) and provide the successful student with a stipend at the Research Council recommended rates (£12,940 for 2008/09). On top of this the project benefits from £5,300 per year research costs.
The project will start between January 2009 and April 2009.
In the first instance the documentation submitted by the applicant will include a cover letter detailing why you wish to be considered for the post and how your skills fit the proposed research, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the name and address of two referees willing to submit a confidential reference.
Informal enquiries and applications should be sent to Dr Gianmarco Radice, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, G12 8QQ, UK. Tel: +44-(0)141-3304068. Email: gradice@aero.gla.ac.uk
Note that unsuccessful but nevertheless outstanding candidates may be considered for other scholarships with a start date of October 2009.

Postgraduate Studentship on Mathematical modelling of self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial surfaces - University of Oxford

Postgraduate Studentship Mathematical modelling of self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial surfaces
Department of Mathematics
STUDENTSHIP covers fees (University and College) and maintenance.
Applications are invited for a postgraduate studentship, funded by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Global Research Partnership [KAUST GRP], to work on "Mathematical modelling of self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial surfaces" under the supervision of Dr Jim Oliver, Dr Sarah Waters (OCIAM) and Dr Jonathan Whiteley (CBG). This DPhil studentship will start on 1 October 2009, is available to all nationalities, covers maintenance and full overseas fees and will be based in the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM).
OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP.
The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, will be allied
to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex
scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four
pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first fiveyears the centre will employ 40 new staff and students. The successful colonization of a medical implant device depends on theearly response of the host's cells to the implant surface. The commercial development of the next generation of devices will therefore benefit from a more quantitative understanding of the mechanisms involved in the adhesion and migration of a single mammalian cell over a biomaterial surface. We have developed two long-wavelength multiphase reactive flow models of the cell's motile machinery. The models are based on poroviscous generalizations of the thin-film equation in lubrication theory and of the Trouton equations in extensional flow theory. The main aims of this project are: (i) to develop robust numerical algorithms to solve the two-dimensional versions of these challenging free boundary problems; and (ii) to calibrate and test their predictions by direct comparison with data from the in vitro cell systems obtained by our experimental collaborators.
The collaborators involved in this project are Professor David Grant, Dr Colin Scotchford (Bioengineering Group, University of Nottingham) and Professor John King (School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nottingham). The studentship is attached to Jesus College. For information about OCCAM please visit our website:
www.maths.ox.ac.uk/occam

PhD Studentships in Nanoporous Material Science - University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh
PhD Studentship
Metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification
School of Engineering and Electronics
Funding is available for a PhD studentship in the School of Engineering and Electronics, University of Edinburgh for a collaborative project with the School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) constitute one of the most exciting developments in recent nanoporous-materials science, with potential applications in many areas, including catalysis, gas separation and storage. The major advantage of MOFs over more traditional porous materials, such as zeolites, is the greater scope for tailoring these materials for specific applications due to their modular synthesis from corner units (generally metal ions or clusters) and linker units (organic molecules able to bridge the metal corners).
The project
Hydrogen is a potential future automotive fuel as well as an important industrial feedstock. For fuel-cell applications, as well as in many industrial processes, high purity is required. The hydrogen required can be produced either by generating it from steam reforming or methanol cracking processes or by recovering it from hydrogen-rich process streams by adsorbing the impurities using pressure swing adsorption. Such streams are readily available in refineries and petrochemical plants and are sometimes burnt as a waste stream. The scope of this project is to design new adsorbents for hydrogen purification using computational and experimental methods.
The studentship
The studentship is available immediately for a period of 4 years. The studentships provide a tax-free EPSRC stipend (currently £12,600 per annum), plus university fees at the Home / EU rate. Additional funding might be available to cover the overseas fees for highly qualified non-EU citizens.
For this project, collaboration between the chemical engineers at the University of Edinburgh and the chemists at the University of St Andrews is a very important element and the successful candidates will spend significant periods of time at the partner institutions, learning about material synthesis and characterisation. The ability to be a team player and to work in close collaboration with a team of chemical engineers and chemists is therefore essential.
The successful candidates will have a first class or 2.1 degree, or equivalent, in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related subject. As the project contains a substantial computational element, some programming experience in FORTRAN or a similar programming language is desirable though not essential.
For further information please contact Dr Tina Düren (+44 (0)131 6504856, tina.duren@ed.ac.uk).

Study in UK The Best Education Bargain in The World

By Siddharth Gupta

UK qualifications are recognised and respected throughout the world. Your UK qualification will be a solid foundation for building your future, boosting your career and prospects for a higher salary. UK universities, colleges and schools will provide a vibrant, creative and challenging environment in which to develop your potential. Quality standards for UK institutions are among the best in the world.

The standard of excellence is set by some of the older universities with recognizable names, like Oxford and Cambridge, but the tradition carries through to many of the universities and colleges throughout the UK. When looking for work in the future, this can be a great selling point in your favour! Universities, colleges and schools continually have to prove that their courses meet strict criteria. Many other countries are now trying to follow the example of the UK.

International students have always been an important presence in the UK, and the numbers have been growing steadily. The top ten countries sending students for study in UK colleges and universities are:

China 50,755
India 19,205
Greece 17,675
Republic of Ireland 16,790
USA 14,755

Unique Selling Points of the UK Education System :

One Year Masters : UK offers a unique one year Master's degree thus saving upon the student's time and cost of education as compared to many other countries across the globe.

Easy Eligibility : The biggest benefit of the UK system is its easy eligibility criterias specially for the international students. Students with a 12+3 years of educational background can apply directly for the Masters in the UK.

IELTS Examination : The international students are required to take only one standardized test IELTS during the applications to the UK universities.Normally a score of 6 bands would put the student on a safer side.

Drop Box Visas : The student visas for UK are a great relief to the international students. They don't have to undergo the trauma of facing the interview.Visas also take a shorter time to happen as compared to many other countries.

Part Time Jobs : The students are typically allowed to work 20 hours per week on campus as well as off campus. This helps the students to take care of their own living expenses.

Stay Back Options : After graduations , the students are offered 2 years of stay back under the IGS(International Graduate Scheme) thus giving them an international exposure and also helping them to recover their expenses on education in the UK.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING : UK education can be much cheaper than you can imagine. There are varities of loans and fundings available for international students . To name a few 'Gilman Scholarship', 'Marshal Scholarship' and many more.

Looking at the above benefits, what more can an international student ask for. It is the best possible education bargain you make for yourself whose fruits the students reap till years to come.

Results from this science will be used (1) to develop a decision support system for sustainable urban planning, accounting for urban metabolism; and (2) to assess impacts of megacities on local, regional, and global air quality and climate. The research objectives will be to determine the magnitude and spatial variability of the fluxes and their controls in relation to these applications.
A variety of methods will be deployed during the research, including micrometeorological techniques (e.g. eddy covariance, large aperture scintillometry) to determine local scale fluxes, and analysis of ground?based, airborne and satellite hyper?spectral optical and thermal IR data to determine the surface energy balance. Numerical modelling will involve urban land surface schemes and their application in WRF.
The post holder will work with Professors Sue Grimmond (sue.grimmond@kcl.ac.uk) and Martin Wooster (Martin.Wooster@kcl.ac.uk) and their existing research teams to deliver cutting?edge research into urban surface energy, water and carbon exchanges.

Urban Meteorology: The EMM Group’s research on urban meteorology has centred around its
